# POS and terminals

Points Business supports in-person payments on a terminal, from a single countertop or portable device to a full point-of-sale system. Which equipment fits your business is decided with you during setup. Contact support for current equipment options.

Terminals accept major cards and mobile wallets by chip, swipe, or tap, and connect over Wi-Fi or cellular, depending on the device.

## Set up your terminal

1. **Book your setup call.** Support walks you through unboxing, connecting, and signing in.
2. **Connect** to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or check for cellular signal if your device uses a SIM.
3. **Activate** the terminal with the details support gives you, which link it to your merchant account.
4. **Choose settings** such as tips, receipts, and an automatic daily close-out time.
5. **Run a small test sale,** then void it. See [Refunds and voids](/docs/merchants/refunds-and-voids).

## Take a sale

1. Start a new payment and enter the amount.
2. Review the total and continue to payment. If asked, choose credit or debit.
3. The customer inserts, taps, or swipes their card, or taps a phone wallet.
4. Wait for the approval message, then print or send a receipt.

Use the chip or tap whenever the card supports it. Swipe only when chip and tap do not work.

## What else your terminal shows

Depending on the device, the terminal menu can include:

- **Dashboard:** total sales, number of transactions, refunds, and average sale for the day
- **Transaction history:** past sales, refunds, voids, and declines, with filters
- **Batch or settle:** open and closed transactions, a batch report, and a manual close-out button
- **Settings:** tips, automatic close-out time, receipt options, and which payment types appear

## Close out every day

At the end of each business day, close out (batch) the terminal. This sends the day's sales for processing and starts your deposit. If you skip a close-out, your deposit can be delayed.

Set an automatic close-out time a little before the end of your day, and check that it ran. If a batch will not close, see [Troubleshooting](/docs/merchants/troubleshooting).

## Returning a terminal

If you need to return equipment, contact support first for instructions and a return label. Include every original part, such as power cords and accessories.
