Recurring billing charges a customer's saved card on a regular schedule, such as monthly memberships or regular service plans. You set it up in Subscriptions in the Merchant Dashboard.
Always get the customer's clear agreement to recurring charges and tell them how to cancel.
The building blocks
| Item | What it is |
|---|---|
| Customer | A saved customer with a card on file |
| Plan | A reusable template: the amount and how often to bill. Keep plan names general so you can reuse them. |
| Subscription | One customer signed up to one plan |
| Discount | An optional amount or percentage off a subscription |
| Invoice | Each bill a subscription creates, shown as open, past due, or paid |
Set up a subscription
- Add the customer with their card details, or pick a saved customer.
- Create or pick a plan with the amount and billing frequency.
- Create the subscription for that customer and plan. You can:
- Add a discount or tax.
- Add a free trial period.
- Choose whether it continues until canceled or ends after a set number of billing cycles.
- Choose automatic billing to the card on file, or send an invoice for the customer to pay.
- Save and check the first invoice.
When a payment fails
Cards expire, get replaced, or run out of available credit. Subscription settings can include retry rules that try a failed payment again and a final step to take if every retry fails.
If the dashboard says the customer has no usable payment method on file, ask the customer to update their card before you try again.
Manage subscriptions
- Resend or print an invoice from the invoice list.
- Cancel a subscription as soon as the customer asks. Charging after cancellation is a common cause of chargebacks.
- Remind customers before trials end or prices change, so the charge is not a surprise.
